What is Oud Attar? Quality, Purity and Price Explained to Benefits, Types & Uses

Oud Attar

Oud (also known as agarwood) originates from the heartwood of Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a specific type of mold. The tree produces a dark, fragrant resin as a defense mechanism, creating the prized aromatic wood. Attar refers to traditional Indian perfumes made through hydro-distillation, typically using a sandalwood oil base.

Oud attar, therefore, is the precious oil extracted from agarwood through this ancient distillation process, capturing the soul of the wood in its most concentrated form.

The Journey of Oud: From Forest to Fragrance

1. The Formation

The magic begins in the dense forests of Southeast Asia, where Aquilaria trees grow. Only about 7-10% of these trees naturally develop the resinous heartwood, making natural oud exceptionally rare and valuable.

2. The Harvest

Experienced harvesters identify infected trees, carefully extracting the dark, resin-saturated wood. This process requires immense skill to avoid damaging the valuable resinous portions.

3. The Distillation

Traditional copper stills are used to slowly distill the wood chips over several weeks. The process is painstakingly slow—sometimes requiring 40 days or more—to extract every precious drop of oil.
