Rose Attar: A Fragrant Elixir from Nature
Perfume makers derive Rose Attar—also known as 'Gulab,' 'Rose Otto,' Gulab Itra, or Gulab Attar—from the petals of Rosa damascena, the Damask Rose. Artisans in ancient Persia first produced this timeless elixir through a unique distillation method, and its rich heritage originates from that tradition. Over the centuries, the art of creating Gulab Attar spread to various parts of the world, including India, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
Attars have gained widespread popularity in regions such as the Middle East, South Asia (including the Far East of India and Bangladesh), and parts of Africa. These 100% pure and natural perfumes are notably free of alcohol and harsh chemicals, making them highly attractive to perfume enthusiasts in Eastern cultures.
Their concentrated nature ensures that even a small bottle will last for several weeks, if not months. Furthermore, the inherent purity and composition of these oils minimize the risk of spoilage, unless someone dilutes the concentrated essence with a food-based carrier oil.
The tradition of crafting Rose Attar continues to thrive in our Kannauj distillery, following the same age-old method developed nearly four centuries ago. In this meticulous process, only the highest quality rose flowers are chosen for extraction.
The essence of this Itra is painstakingly obtained from rose petals and flowers, a practice with its origins deeply rooted in the Indian subcontinent. Collecting over 50 kilograms of these petals is necessary to produce approximately 10 milliliters of this precious Attar. The extraction method employed is Hydro-distillation, a technique shared by many other Attars.
