Perfumers extract 'Rose Attar'—also known as 'Gulab,' 'Rose Otto,' 'Gulab Itra,' or 'Gulab Attar'—from the petals of *Rosa damascena*, or the 'Damask Rose.' Artisans of antiquity were the first to create this timeless fragrance using a unique distillation method, and its rich heritage remains deeply rooted in that very tradition. Over the centuries, the art of crafting rose attar spread to various parts of the world, including India, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
Attars have garnered immense popularity in regions such as the Middle East, South Asia (including India's far-eastern regions and Bangladesh), and parts of Africa. These are 100% pure and natural fragrances, notably free from alcohol and harsh chemicals; for this very reason, they are highly cherished among perfume enthusiasts in Eastern cultures.
Their concentrated nature ensures that even a small vial will last for several weeks, or perhaps even months. Furthermore, due to the inherent purity and composition of these oils, the risk of spoilage is extremely low—provided, of course, that one does not dilute this concentrated extract with a food-grade carrier oil.
The tradition of crafting rose attar continues to flourish today at our distillery in Kannauj, where we employ the very same age-old method developed nearly four centuries ago. In this meticulous process, only the finest quality rose blossoms are selected for the extraction of the essence.
The extract for this fragrance is painstakingly drawn from rose petals and flowers—a practice with roots running deep within the Indian subcontinent. To produce a mere 10 milliliters of this precious attar, it is necessary to harvest over 50 kilograms of rose petals. To extract its essence, the 'hydro-distillation' method is employed—a technique that is also used in the production of many other perfumes.
